Mastering Communication

Think about your own culture as you take a moment to read and answer these questions.
  • How is disagreement expressed?
  • How is bad news or a negative concern communicated?
  • How important does saving face seem to be?
  • Are people generally direct or indirect in their conversation?

Your answers to these questions are likely to be different from the way a person from another country answers them. Even slight differences in communication styles can create massive misunderstandings. By the time you realize that you have not communicated what you intended, it might already be too late.

This module seeks to address this issue by focusing on 3 main objectives. By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify how cultural differences in verbal communication are manifested in daily life
  • Utilize techniques that will allow you to avoid misunderstandings when communicating with others
  • Recognize the various meanings that nonverbal forms of communication might take in a different culture.
